"1984"
It began when Jean-Louis Dumas, the president of Hermès at the time,
chanced to sit next to British actress Jane Birkin on a plane.
She had packed many items into a large bag, and seeing this, Mr. Dumas
offered to create a bag for Jane that could hold everything she packed.
The bag created for Jane
led to the birth of the "Birkin," which would later become one of Hermès's masterpieces.
~So why is the Birkin so expensive?~
First, their passion for leather.
Hermès leather is of the highest quality.
They source it from wholesalers who process raw hides into leather.
The best finished leather from French companies that produce the highest quality leather
is used.
Because Birkins are made using only such top-quality leather,
they become durable and long-lasting.
Furthermore, the production of Birkins is strictly limited.
The reason is that
using carefully selected leather, only a few skilled artisans at Hermès
handcraft each bag from start to finish, all by themselves.
Even at the fastest pace,
it takes about one day to create one bag. Inside each completed bag,
the ID of the artisan who made it is inscribed.
They don't always have good leather available,
nor can they always produce at this speed.
