The Origin of Ties
Hello everyone!
This is ISEYA ONLINE.
Spring has arrived earlier than usual this year,
making me wonder if the cherry blossoms will bloom early too...
I'm eagerly anticipating their early arrival.🌸
Time flies...
Now then! This time, I'd like to delve into an item
that I personally rely on every day and is essential for business!

~ The Origin of the Tie ~
・While there are several theories about the origin of the tie, it dates back to the era of the 'Ancient Roman Empire'.
It is said to have begun when soldiers wrapped woolen cloth around their necks to prevent cold wind from entering through their collars.
The prototype of today's tie, and what widely popularized it, is believed to be the cloth worn by soldiers of the Austrian-Croatian Croat Regiment who came to France in the 1600s.
~ History of Ties in Japan ~
・Ties are believed to have been introduced to Japan around the 18th century with the return of 'John Manjiro'.
Manjiro was shipwrecked while out fishing with his companions and was rescued by an American whaling ship. At his request, he accompanied them to America.
Upon his eventual return, the ties he brought back were among several items that helped popularize them.
This also became an opportunity for Western clothing to spread, influencing politics and military uniforms.
~ The Day the First Tie was Made in Japan ~
In 1882, ties were first sold in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
On October 1, 1884, the first Japanese-made tie was manufactured and sold.
This first tie was made by Umekichi Koyama, a hat manufacturer living in Kanda at the time.
Incidentally, the first tie made by Umekichi is said to have been a bow tie.
In commemoration of the first tie made in Japan,
the Japan Necktie Association Federation designated October 1st as 'Tie Day' in 1971.
